You have to see this to believe it. Actually, I saw it and I’m still not sure I believe it.

(For what it’s worth: They refer to cellphones 2 watts of transmitter power. They are in the UK. I believe US handset phones have 0.6 watts of transmitter power, and the old “bag phones” have 3 watts.)

If the specs for digital phones are the same as for the old analog (AMPS) cell phones, then you are correct that the maximum power output is 600mW. I think that it is rare for cell phones to operate at maximum power. The software usually reduces power to the lowest possible level based on the distance to the nearest tower. I think that the digital phones are able to operate at lower power levels than their analog counterparts as well.

I would not want to be anywhere near an antenna transmititng at 2 Watts.

Let’s see: two 0.6 watt phones is about 1/800th the power of a good microwave oven. If it
takes *at least* a minute to cook an egg in the microwave, it would take the cell phones
800 minutes (over 13 hours) to do so.

Of course, once the egg starts heating *at all*, it starts dissipating energy. Once it
reaches only a lukewarm temperature, it will dissipate 1.2 watts and cease getting any warmer.

Oh yes – and this assumes *all* the radio energy from the phones is absorbed by the egg.

Stumbled on this page by chance. This link – http://www.i-sis.org.uk/FOI2.php – states that, for a 2W mobile phone “every
communication channel has 8 time slots (thus the average power of a handset is 1/8 of the peak values, ie, beween
0.125 and 0.25W)”. This would extend the cooking time calculated by Jim to more like 37 hours, even if all the
energy is absorbed by the egg. What a load of *%$!
